Through popular elections on even numbered years, Lynchburg citizens regularly choose the seven members of City Council. Elected to staggered four-year terms of office, City Council is elected on either an at-large (3 members) or ward (4 members) representational basis. From among their group, the elected City Council members, in turn, choose by simple majority vote a President or Mayor, who serves a two-year term. As the chief legislative body of the municipal corporation, the City Council conducts regular meetings on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month, for the purpose of accomplishing City Charter - prescribed responsibilities and business transactions. City Council meetings are broadcast live on Lynchburg Government Channel LTV 15.  Council meetings can also be viewed through our website at: http://www.lynchburgva.gov and then click on the "View Council" icon.  The City Manager, City Attorney, and the City Clerk are appointed by City Council.

City Council has two regular meetings each month: the second and fourth Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. At 5:00 p.m. all Work Session items are heard and at 7:30 p.m. all public hearings and all other matters are heard.  These meetings are held in the City Council Chamber, First Floor, City Hall, 900 Church Street.

The second regular meeting during the months of July, August and December are normally cancelled each year by City Council.

Other duties and responsibilities of City Council include:  (1) any and all additions and amendments to the Lynchburg City Code; and (2) creation of Council-appointed Boards and Commissions.
